Legacy Coal Mining: Ground Models and Mining Effects

This two day interactive course is intended as an introduction to the assessment and treatment of historical Coal Workings in the UK for early career professionals and refresher course for working professionals.

Coal mining has altered the landscape and stability of the ground beneath us. Since 1872 records of abandoned mine workings have been required but they can be incomplete and mining may have taken place before this date. The Coal Measures are a complex sequence of sediments disturbed by faulting and folding. When investigating sites for development or infrastructure the potential for coal workings being present requires a geologist with knowledge of how coal measures were formed, their sequences and structure, an ability to interpret three dimensional geology and when historical workings have been undertaken, an understanding of mining techniques and practices is also required.
