The Science of discovery: How to Find More Orebodies

The workshop will shine a light on the existing poor thinking that has delivered sub-par discovery performance to the resources sector in recent years. It will allow participants to identify poor thinking in their businesses and to avoid common thinking traps and bias. Participants will be shown how to rethink the system network settings of the exploration industry to drive success in the 21st Century.

The second and third days will focus on Systems Thinking as a paradigm shift in understanding the way that mineralising systems and ore deposition works. Exercises will help participants identify the key levers that can control ore deposit location and improved exploration performance. The new systems understanding will then be translated into data proxies using Targeting Science to develop exploration target templates and new gameplans.

Through gaining greater understanding of the difference between risk and uncertainty participants will develop skills required to take on bigger and more complex projects with greater confidence.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the difference between risk and uncertainty.
  • Understanding complex systems and mineralisation thermodynamics.
  • Understand how systems not individuals deliver discovery success (or failure).
  • How to improve exploration prediction for success under cover.
  • How to build and analyse a systems map.
  • How to power-map stakeholders and identify key levers in socio-economic systems and the circular economy.
  • Develop the skills and confidence to be decisive – and to sell your decisions to stakeholders.
  • How to lead for discovery success.
